Stakeholder Profile: Arizona Game and Fish Commission and Department
The Arizona Game and Fish Department is the State Agency responsible for the conservation and management of fish and wildlife resources for the State of Arizona. The Department serves the Arizona Game and Fish Commission, a panel of gubernatorial appointed Commissioners, charged with the responsibilities that include the “establishment of broad policies and long-range programs for the management, preservation, and harvest of wildlife.”
The Commission and the Department have a long history of involvement in the management of wildlife resources in conjunction with operation of Glen Canyon Dam. The Department worked closely with the Bureau of Reclamation, the National Park Service, and the Fish and Wildlife Service in establishment and subsequent management of a trout fishery at Lees Ferry. The Department was intimately involved with Glen Canyon Environmental Studies that commenced in 1982, and wildlife associated research efforts in conjunction with that program. The Department served for the Commission as a Cooperating Agency in the development and preparation of the Environmental Impact Statement for the Operation of Glen Canyon Dam, and has been a member of the Federal Advisory Adaptive Management Work Group since its inception in 1996, and has been intimately involved in research efforts in conjunction with the Grand Canyon Monitoring and Research Center.
The Departments interests are statutorily based and are specifically related to conservation of fish and wildlife resources in Glen and Grand Canyons, and recreation that involves those resources. Dr. Bruce D. Taubert represents the Game and Fish Commission and the Department on the Adaptive Management Work Group.
